In addition, make sure to raise the set point to around 78 degrees when you’re out or asleep, as this will keep the house from getting too hot and the AC from running too long afterward.

3. Don’t Generate Heat Indoors

You want to minimize your AC usage so that the system doesn’t break down and require repairs; one way to do this is to minimize generating heat and humidity inside the home. Be sure to use exhaust fans in the bathroom after showers, and try not to use your oven or cooktop for long periods as it will heat up the kitchen.

4. Closing Windows and Sealing Cracks

Weather stripping, where you seal the cracks around your doors and windows, will help retain the cool air in your home for as long as possible and also reduce cooling costs. Don’t overlook the obvious, though. Keep all windows and doors shut so they don’t let out all your cool air.
